David Thompson

I was raised in a small 'picture postcard' market town, but have lived for over half my life in our vibrant capital. Whilst retaining a deep love and knowledge of the British countryside, I consider myself very much a 'city slicker'. This leaves me ideally placed to guide visitors with equal enthusiasm to isolated rural locations, country houses and churches, or through the complex urban fabric of London - arguably the most cosmopolitan city in the world.

Fine Art trained, and formerly a magazine art editor, my passion is architecture and contemporary design. I am fascinated by design process, and when guiding buildings don’t simply look at them from aesthetics alone, but consider how they are put together and work. I see London as a collection of contrasting villages – urbane to anarchic, and most certainly never dull – just waiting for us to explore together. As a practicing artist I keep up-to-date with current trends and exhibitions, and offer tours, walks and gallery visits to show you the very best in historic and contemporary culture that Britain has to offer.

Perhaps you might like to tap into my deep personal interest in the rich diversity of gay history and culture – the tranquil beauty of Vita Sackville-West's garden at Sissinghurst; bohemian drinking clubs and cafes of Soho frequented by Francis Bacon and Derek Jarman; the academia of Virginia Wolfe's Bloomsbury, to give you a taste – by letting me compile a tour for you. I will inform and entertain with a liberal sprinkling of anecdotes on the lives, works and loves of numerous gay men and women. Why not try my tour of Westminster Abbey, ‘Within these ancient stones lie the gayest bones’

Whatever your particular interests may be I will ensure that you get the best value and entertainment from our time together. I look forward to meeting you.
